Question: How does one become a South Carolina State Constable?

Answer:

The process of becoming a SC State Constable is a two-step process. First, you must call State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) at (803) 896-7014 and request a SC State Constable Application Packet. After returning your application to SLED they will do a background check and provide you with a letter certifying eligibility.

Next you must contact your nearest state technical college and enroll in their Basic Constable Training course. They will need a copy of your SLED provided letter-certifying eligibility. There are 16 technical colleges in the South Carolina. To locate the nearest one go to http://www.sctechsystem.com/college.htm or call the SC State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education at (803) 896-5320.

The Basic Constable Training course is 48 hours. It covers policy and procedures, laws of arrest, search and seizures, crisis intervention, evidence, officer survival, handling prisoners, constitutional law, juvenile procedures/child abuse, police community relations, police communications, civil liabilities, ethics and firearms. Students must make 70 or above on the final exam and pass the firearms training/range qualifications.

After successfully completing the Basic Constable Training you will receive a certificate from the Technical College. Mail the certificate to SLED and in a short period SLED will mail back your Governors Law Enforcement Commission as a South Carolina State Constable.
