The
Constable in South Carolina
The
history of the Constable in South Carolina is a long and distinguished one. The
Constable appeared in the first one hundred years of the existence of the
colony. Constables evolved with the soon to be state and have been a mainstay of
the Sheriff’s office since their inception in 1789. The modern day Constable
in South Carolina does far more that his predecessors ever thought of being
involved with. The modern State Constable not only serves papers and attends
civil matters but is a modern sworn law enforcement professional that stands
ready to be of service to his community and state at a moments notice. The
Constable is a law enforcement officer that assist any law enforcement agency
desiring assistance anywhere in the state and is empowered by the Governor of
South Carolina and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) with statewide
police authority. The State Constable is not an agent of SLED but is regulated
by and overseen by SLED.
Commitment to community service, a
desire to be a part of a professional and progressive branch of law enforcement,
qualities and personal attributes that pass the strict scrutiny of SLED are the
